Tips for What to Write in Your Holiday Cards

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

what to write in your christmas cards the papery philadelphia card stores

As I sit down to address my own large pile of holiday cards, it occurs to me, what should I say?  Should I be funny, sentimental, or simply autograph the darn thing?

Seriously, why are holiday card messages so difficult to write?  There’s so much pressure to be witty, emotional and creative. Or, lengthy! Usually, I tend to focus on being thankful, grateful, extending wishes of good cheer and wishes for a Happy New Year. I find Christmas or holiday card greetings are the ideal spot to reflect, encourage, thank or send warm wishes to those we don’t regularly see.  For many of the cards I’ll write this year, I’ll be including specific greetings that update long-distance friends or family on what’s happening in my little corner of the world.  However, for many other holiday cards; a short, meaningful message will be written.

Below you’ll find a list of holiday card greetings you may find useful as you write your own holiday cards.  Perhaps they’ll inspire you to write your own Christmas card signature message!

HOLIDAY CARD MESSAGES

  1. “Hoping you are surrounded by love and warmth this holiday season.”
  2. “May the magic of love twinkle in your lives throughout the holiday season and the upcoming new year.”
  3. “We wish you health, comfort and prosperity this holiday season.”
  4. “May beautiful moments and happy memories surround you with joy this Christmas.”
  5. “Christmas is love in action.  Every time we love, every time we give, it’s Christmas.”
  6. “May your home be filled with the joy of family and friends this holiday season.”
  7. “Blessed is the season which engages the whole world in a conspiracy of love!”
  8. “Wishing you a festive holiday season and New Year!”
  9. “We thank you for giving us the opportunity to work with you this year.  We wish you a Happy Hanukkah and a New Year filled with all good things.”
  10. “Heartfelt greetings and bountiful blessings to you and yours this holiday season.”
  11. “Christmas is not a date. It’s a state of mind.”
  12. “Hope the holidays bring you many reasons to smile.”
  13. “Wishing you good times, good cheer and a Happy New Year!”
  14. “May your holidays sparkle and shine with good cheer!”
  15. “Wishing you the joy of family, the happiness of friends and the love of Christmas!”
  16. “Write it on your heart: That every day is the best day of the year. Happy New Year!”
  17. “May the peace and beauty of the season remain with you throughout the coming year.”
  18. “The year-end brings no greater pleasure than the opportunity to express to you season’s greetings and good wishes.  May your holidays and New Year be filled with much happiness!”
  19. “May your holidays be merry and bright!”
  20. “At this joyous time of year, we are grateful for our work with you. We wish you abundance, happiness and peace in a New Year filled with hope.  Happy Holidays!”

As you know, it can take some time, thought and care to send out holiday cards. So, if you receive a holiday card it is always thoughtful to graciously acknowledge you have received it.  Either by sending your own card or by mentioning it in person. Now, turn on that holiday music, pour yourself a tall glass of eggnog, and go tackle that pile of cards!  Happy Holidays!

VOTE FOR US! in the Old City Window Design Contest!

Friday, October 14th, 2011

It’s time for the third annual Old City Window Design Contest!

The Old City Windows Design Contest 2011 is a design-inspired window competition and event that celebrates innovative thinking and visual inspiration from students, artists, and professionals in various fields of design.

Last year, we one the award for “Public Favorite” for our seasonal display of leafy cutouts and haunting owls.  This year, we’re embracing the whimsical with a window planted with paper pinwheel flowers!  Brightly colored pinwheels were made using wrapping paper we sell in the store, then “planted” on twigs in window boxes lined with finely shredded paper “grass.”  Fans keep the pinwheels twirling for a windy wall of movement. Garlands of calligraphed paper clouds float above underneath pinecone drops.  Sound interesting? Well it is! Stop by and take a look!

The contest runs through October 23 and we’d LOVE YOUR VOTE! You can also read more about the contest and see photos of last year’s winners by clicking HERE.

Mother’s Day: A Tribute to the Wonderful Moms in My Life

Saturday, May 7th, 2011

Everyone knows that mothers are the tireless superheroes, the knowledgeable teachers, the brave healers, the finest five-star chefs (Italian, in my case) and the patient nurturers.  Really, what would we do without them? Mothers have the most challenging yet most rewarding job in the world, but a job that is sometimes taken for granted in the everyday hustle and bustle of life.  As time passes, and we all walk to the beat of Father Time, each day shared with our mothers should be regarded as more precious than the last.

Mother’s Day in our house has always been special, more than other holidays, in fact, because it’s a day celebrating the heart of the family.  This year, the holiday is even more endearing because we are honoring my Mom, Mary Lou, and my Mom’s mom, my 98 year old Grandmother, Lena.  (see below for a photo of us). Having three generations living and buzzing around each other on a daily basis is something that I treasure in my soul.  It’s a GIFT to have these strong, confident, genuine, loving and festive women in my world.  Their presence and inspiration have been, and continue to be, instrumental in both my personal and professional lives.

The stationery business, The Papery, really started with my Grandmother.  With her encouragement, her two sons opened the first Papery store in Greenwich, Connecticut, which then spread to many other locations on the East Coast. Carrying on the tradition, ten years ago my mother and I opened a Papery store in Marlton, New Jersey to great success.

In 2003, just three years later, I opened the Philadelphia store in the historic Old City District.  My dear mother, Mary Lou, works with me at the store everyday and it’s a blessing to have her!  The help and support, and neverending hysterical LAUGHS she provides, keeps me, as well as The Papery staff in good spirits no matter what’s going on in the fast-paced world of stationery!  We love her carefree attitude, sense of humor, and sweet tone of innocence. She really does bring a sense of levity to our “home away from home” and it wouldn’t be the same without her.

The International Stationery Show takes place in New York City in just a couple of weeks and it’s been our traditional over the past ten years to make a Mother/Daughter event of it.  We travel with our husbands to Manhattan a couple days prior to the show opening to enjoy new restaurants, Broadways shows and shopping excursions before getting down to business.  After our fun-packed weekend, the “boys” leave and it’s just my mom and I for three nights together in the Big Apple.  We LOVE the Stationery Show and get such fantastic inspiration from seeing all the artists and manufacturers’ new product lines. But the best moments are when we leave the show and just walk around the city with no plan in mind.  We ALWAYS manage to come upon the most delicious little Italian restaurants (usually on the Upper East Side). My mom is always sure to start some type of flirtatious conversation with the adorable waiter with the charming accent.  We have such a good time that we giggle together like girlfriends all the way back to the hotel.

Sadly, this year will be a bit different.  My Mom will only be able to spend one night with me as her mother, Grandma Lena, is about to go into a nursing home.  At 98 years of age, and despite being in wonderful physical condition, she’s been suffering from dementia and cannot live on her own anymore.  Our entire family is heartbroken and has been struggling with the challenging decision.  But, it’s not about us, it’s about what’s best for Lena.

So this Mother’s Day is all about appreciating MEMORIES, TREASURING the past and being HOPEFUL for a long future with our moms and grandmas by our sides.

We love you so very dearly.  XO
